Combined treatment of exudative age related macular degeneration with photodynamic therapy and intravitreal triamcinolone

    Get PDF
Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to age related macular degeneration is among the leading causes of legal blindness in developed countries. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with verteporfin induces CNV closure causing little damage to healthy tissue, but the need to re-treat may lead to low final visual acuity at an unacceptable cost. The association of intravitreous triamcinolone or antiangiogenic drugs with PDT has been used in order to reduce these limitations of the therapy. The combination of PDT and intravitreous triamcinolone, its complications and outcome at one and two-year follow-up are discussed

This study investigates the beneficial effect of a milk casein hydrolyzate supplemented with phytosterols in hypercholesterolemic hypertensive rats. Spontaneously hypertensive rats were fed for 8 weeks with standard diet, or high cholesterol diet alone and supplemented with casein hydrolyzate or casein hydrolyzate plus phytosterols. Blood pressure was measured by tail-cuff method, vascular reactivity was performed on isolated aorta and biochemical parameters were evaluated in plasma. The hypercholesterolemic diet caused elevation of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, atherogenic index, lipid peroxidation, liver size and hepatic steatosis accompanied with a severe reduction of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The treatment with the casein hydrolyzate reduced blood pressure, cardiac hypertrophy and oxidative stress, and improved the endothelial function. The incorporation of phytosterols prevented the changes caused by the hypercholesterolemic diet and increased the antioxidant effect of casein hydrolyzate. In conclusion, treatment with milk casein hydrolyzate supplemented with phytosterols provides benefits when coexisting hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. This work was supported by project FP7-SME-2012-315349 (FOFIND) financed by the European Commission.

Large stabilization effects by intramolecular Beryllium bonds in Ortho-Benzene derivatives

Intramolecular interactions are shown to be key for favoring a given structure in systems with a variety of conformers. In ortho-substituted benzene derivatives including a beryllium moiety, beryllium bonds provide very large stabilizations with respect to non-bound conformers and enthalpy differences above one hundred kJ·mol(−1) are found in the most favorable cases, especially if the newly formed rings are five or six-membered heterocycles. These values are in general significantly larger than hydrogen bonds in 1,2-dihidroxybenzene. Conformers stabilized by a beryllium bond exhibit the typical features of this non-covalent interaction, such as the presence of a bond critical point according to the topology of the electron density, positive Laplacian values, significant geometrical distortions and strong interaction energies between the donor and acceptor quantified by using the Natural Bond Orbital approach. An isodesmic reaction scheme is used as a tool to measure the strength of the beryllium bond in these systems in terms of isodesmic energies (analogous to binding energies), interaction energies and deformation energies. This approach shows that a huge amount of energy is spent on deforming the donor–acceptor pairs to form the new rings

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
This paper describes an alternance training experience within the university context relying on the case of Florida Universitaria, affiliated to the University of Valencia. Alternance training involves periods of education provision on university premises with on-the-job internships. The aim of this study is to provide an empirical description of an initiative showing the impact of alternance on the development of students' skills. The methodology underlying the alternance training program is that of problem-based learning (PBL). PBL has been implemented within an integrated project put in practice in the third year of the Bachelor Degrees in Early Childhood and Primary Education. The results show that reflective practice between the school and the workplace promotes students' learning. The benefits of alternance training at university level are sound: it increases student motivation, gives meaning to theoretical knowledge, and multiplies learning interactions in academic and professional environments

Can plasma α-Synuclein help us to differentiate parkinson’s disease from essential tremor?

Background: Studies have revealed controversial results regarding the diagnostic accuracy of plasma α-synuclein levels in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). This study was aimed to analyze the diagnostic accuracy of plasma α-synuclein in PD versus healthy controls and patients with essential tremor (ET). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we included de novo (n = 19) and advanced PD patients [OFF (n = 33), and On (n = 35) states], patients with ET (n = 19), and controls (n = 35). The total plasma α-synuclein levels were determined using an ELISA sandwich method. We performed adjusted multivariate regression analysis to estimate the association of α-synuclein levels with group conditions [controls, ET, and de novo, OFF and ON-PD]. We studied the diagnostic accuracy of plasma α-synuclein using the area under the curve (AUC). Results: The plasma α-synuclein levels were higher in controls compared to PD and ET (p < 0.0001), discriminating de novo PD from controls (AUC = 0.74, 95% CI 0.60–0.89), with a trend towards in advanced PD (OFF state) from ET (AUC = 0.69, 95% CI 0.53–0.84). Conclusions: This is the first study examining and comparing plasma α-synuclein levels in ET vs. PD and controls. Preliminary findings suggest that plasma α-synuclein levels might help to discriminate de novo and advanced PD from controls and ET.Junta de Castilla y León is acknowledged for funding through the Biomedicine open project call (Ref.
